OUR CURRICULUM APPROACH

Through our child led, adult guided approach, The Sanctuary Day Nursery will provide a safe, stimulating, and exciting environment that ignites children’s imaginations. Endless opportunities are given to our children to enable them to see that nothing should stop them from achieving and nothing is impossible. The togetherness approach and feel of our home from home nursery means all our staff know all our children and so it is a smooth journey throughout their time with us. We will provide a holistic approach to each child’s individual early years journey that gives them the foundations to be confident, resilient, independent, kind and caring members of their community.

Our Mission Statement

Child Playing with Wooden Toys

In the moment planning is the approach to planning we use as it provides children with the best opportunities to learn in a way that is child friendly and empower every individual child. The idea is to capture the interest of a child or children in the present moment.

Young children have a natural desire to learn, explore and question. Therefore, in our nursery our environment enables child-initiated play in order to capture the moment of engagement. Careful observation by practitioners is key to utilising the approach. Opportunities to seize the moment when a child shows interest in an activity which can be built upon needs to be recognised, these are normally called ‘teachable moments’. Written ‘planning’ is then carried out in the form of observations, records of the interactions and notes on the outcomes on a focus week sheet.

The outcomes will be shared with you through a verbal discussion and then uploaded on to tapestry to share ideas and information on how to support your child in their next stage of their development.

Children Under 3 years old

All children under the age of 3 will be a continuous focus child. This is because they are developing at a rapid rate in regards to working towards developmental milestones.

Children aged 3-4 years old

Our 3-4 year olds will be a focus child once a term but this does not mean we will not be doing our continuous observations. You will see these captured through group observations and Wow moments.

We have started to send home Parent Consultation Sheets which we would greatly appreciate your feedback and photos from home. This enables use to continue to gain insightful information about what each child is getting up to at home, any special life events they are celebrating or anything new happening. Children love to see their photos in the nursery. These become such significant talking points and provides so much opportunity to learn new things from them too.

For children whom may require further support in specific areas, they may have a longer period of time as a ‘focus child’ and this is to ensure we are supporting them with any gaps in their development and they are being provided with the specific support they require. Your child’s key person will have conversations with you regarding this.
